InBody 580:
A Personalized Plan Built Around Your Health, Not Just the Number on the Scale

Weight loss is not simply a matter of eating less or trying harder. Your metabolism, medical history, medications, hormones, sleep, stress, activity level, and daily responsibilities can all affect your ability to lose weight and maintain your results.

At IWC Primary Care, we combine personalized medical weight loss with the advanced InBody 580 body composition analyzer to create customized care plans for adults throughout San Diego from our office in Spring Valley, CA.

Your provider takes time to understand your health, concerns, previous weight-loss efforts, and personal goals. Together, we develop a realistic plan that may include nutrition guidance, physical activity, laboratory testing, body composition monitoring, and prescription medication when medically appropriate.

Our goal is not only to help you lose weight. We want to help you reduce body fat, preserve muscle, improve your health, and build habits you can maintain.

Clinical Body Composition Analysis Built Into Your Care: InBody 580

For established IWC Primary Care patients participating in our Medical Weight Loss Program, InBody 580 body composition analysis is included with eligible weight management visits at no additional charge. This allows our providers to monitor changes in body composition, not just the number on the scale.

The InBody 580 uses advanced multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to quantify body composition beyond body weight alone. By measuring skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, visceral fat, total body water, and segmental lean mass, it provides clinically relevant data that helps guide individualized medical weight management and monitor changes over time.

What May Be Included in Your Weight-Loss Plan

Personalized medical support, body composition monitoring, and practical guidance designed around your health.

Every patient’s needs are different. Your medical weight-loss plan may combine clinical evaluation, lifestyle support, ongoing monitoring, and prescription treatment when appropriate.

InBody 580 Body Composition Analysis

See changes in body fat and muscle that a traditional scale cannot show. For established patients participating in the IWC Medical Weight Loss Program, InBody 580 body composition analysis is included in eligible weight-management visits at no separate cost for the scan.

The InBody 580 helps your provider monitor:

  • Skeletal muscle mass

  • Body-fat mass

  • Body-fat percentage

  • Estimated visceral fat

  • Body-water distribution

  • Lean mass in both arms, both legs, and the trunk

  • Left-to-right balance

  • Changes between visits

Follow-up testing can help determine whether you are reducing body fat, preserving muscle, and making progress that may not appear on a traditional scale.

Laboratory Testing and Health Evaluation

Identify medical factors that may affect your weight or treatment options.

When appropriate, laboratory testing may help evaluate concerns such as:

  • Diabetes or prediabetes

  • High cholesterol

  • Thyroid disorders

  • Liver health

  • Kidney function

  • Other metabolic or hormonal concerns

Your provider will explain your results and discuss how they may affect your treatment plan.

Individualized Nutrition Guidance

Practical recommendations that fit your health, preferences, and daily routine. Your provider can help you develop a realistic eating plan based on your medical conditions, medications, schedule, food preferences, and goals.

The focus is not on perfection or overly restrictive dieting. It is on creating sustainable habits that support your health.

Physical Activity and Strength Support

Movement recommendations that support fat loss, muscle preservation, and mobility.

Physical activity can support cardiovascular health, blood sugar management, strength, mobility, and overall well-being.

Your provider may also discuss resistance exercise to help preserve lean tissue during weight loss, based on your current health and physical ability.

Ongoing Monitoring and Follow-Up

Prescription Weight-Loss Medication

Medication options considered through an individualized medical evaluation. Prescription weight-loss medication may be considered for patients who meet appropriate clinical criteria.

Your provider will discuss potential benefits, risks, side effects, costs, and alternatives before recommending treatment. Medication is used as part of a broader care plan that may also include nutrition, movement, body composition monitoring, and regular follow-up.

Track your progress and adjust your care as your needs change. Weight management is rarely a straight line.

Regular follow-up allows your provider to:

  • Review your weight and body composition trends

  • Monitor medication response and side effects

  • Discuss nutrition and physical activity

  • Review laboratory findings

  • Address questions or challenges

  • Adjust your treatment plan when needed

  • The goal is not simply to lower the number on the scale.

It is to support sustainable fat loss while protecting muscle, strength, function, and long-term health.

Medical Weight Loss and GLP-1 Medications

Medications may be appropriate for some patients after an individual medical evaluation. Your provider will review your health history, medications, goals, potential risks, and treatment options.

Follow-up visits may include monitoring for:

  • Medication response

  • Side effects

  • Hydration and nutrition

  • Protein intake

  • Muscle preservation

  • Changes in body composition

Medication is one part of a broader plan that includes medical care, healthy habits, & regular follow-up.

Protecting Muscle During Weight Loss

Weight loss can come from both body fat and lean tissue. InBody monitoring helps your provider evaluate whether you are reducing fat while maintaining muscle.

When results show more muscle loss than intended, your provider may adjust your nutrition, protein intake, physical activity, medication, or pace of weight loss.

Who May Benefit From Medical Weight-Loss Care?

Medical weight-loss care may be helpful if you:

  • Have struggled to lose weight or maintain previous results

  • Want a plan tailored to your health and lifestyle

  • Are considering prescription weight-loss medication

  • Are currently using a GLP-1 medication

  • Want to lose body fat while preserving muscle

  • Have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or thyroid concerns

  • Feel that the scale does not reflect your progress

You do not need to wait until your weight becomes an emergency to ask for support.

What to Expect at Your First Weight-Loss Visit

A thoughtful evaluation focused on your health, experiences, and goals. During your visit, your provider may:

  • Review your medical and weight history

  • Discuss previous weight-loss attempts

  • Review medications and supplements

  • Evaluate relevant health conditions

  • Discuss nutrition, activity, sleep, and stress

  • Recommend laboratory testing when appropriate

  • Discuss medication and body composition testing

  • Develop your initial treatment plan

Medical weight-loss care is available to established IWC Primary Care patients.

✓  A Team That Listens

Dr. Afflalo is joined by Family Nurse Practitioners Danielle Gordon, Monica Cistrone, Donna Mather, Lily Au-Yeung, and Skylar Veltri. Together, the team brings experience in family medicine, preventive care, lifestyle medicine, integrative care, chronic disease management, and patient education.

What connects our providers is a shared belief that good healthcare begins with listening. We take time to understand your history, your daily life, and what has made weight management difficult before recommending a path forward.

✓  Care That Starts With Your Story

We take time to understand what you have tried, what has made weight management difficult, and what meaningful progress looks like to you. Your plan may consider your medical conditions, medications, laboratory results, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, and lifestyle. The goal is not to place you into a standard program. It is to build care around the life you are actually living.

✓  More Than a Number on the Scale

For established patients participating in our Medical Weight Loss Program, InBody 580 body composition analysis is included in eligible visits at no separate charge for the scan itself. This allows your provider to monitor changes in body fat, muscle, visceral fat, body water, and lean mass distribution. The technology gives us more information, but the conversation with your provider remains at the center of your care.

✓  Support That Continues With You

Progress is rarely a straight line. Our team provides ongoing follow-up, answers your questions, and adjusts your care as your health, treatment response, and circumstances change. IWC can also help manage related concerns such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, and preventive health needs.

You deserve care that respects where you are today, recognizes the effort you have already made, and helps you move forward with confidence.
