See More Than Your Weight With an InBody 580 Scan
Two people can be the same height and weigh exactly the same, yet have very different amounts of muscle, body fat, and visceral fat.
A traditional scale cannot tell them apart.
At IWC Primary Care in Spring Valley, CA, the InBody 580 provides a more complete picture of what contributes to your weight. This professional body composition analyzer estimates skeletal muscle mass, body-fat mass, body-fat percentage, body water, visceral fat, and lean mass distribution.
The test is brief, noninvasive, and completed while you stand on the platform and hold the hand electrodes. There are no needles, injections, or enclosed scanners.

Weight is one number. Body composition provides the context.
At IWC Primary Care, we can help you better understand your body composition and how it relates to your health and weight-loss goals.
Same Weight, Different Body Composition.
Consider two adults who are the same height and both weigh 174 pounds.
Measurement | Person A | Person B |
Weight | 174 lb | 174 lb |
Body fat | 31% | 19% |
Skeletal muscle mass | 58 lb | 79 lb |
Visceral fat level | 14 | 5 |
A bathroom scale gives both people the same result. An InBody scan shows that their bodies are made up differently.
Person A has a higher estimated body-fat percentage, less skeletal muscle mass, and a higher visceral fat level. Person B has more skeletal muscle and a lower estimated proportion of body fat.
These measurements do not diagnose either person on their own. Your provider reviews them alongside your medical history, laboratory results, medications, symptoms, activity level, and personal goals.
This example is provided for educational purposes and does not represent actual patient results.

Why the scale can hide meaningful progress
You may be eating differently, exercising more, or following a medical weight-loss plan, yet see little change on the scale.
That does not always mean your plan is not working.
A scale cannot tell whether a change came from body fat, lean tissue, or body water. You could lose fat while maintaining muscle and see only a small change in total weight. You could also lose weight while losing more muscle than intended.
A body composition scan helps your provider look beyond total weight and evaluate what may be changing.
The scale answers, “How much do I weigh?”
Body composition helps answer, “What is changing?”
How does the InBody 580 work?
The InBody 580 uses bioelectrical impedance analysis, also called BIA.
During the test, you stand barefoot on the device and hold the hand electrodes. A low-level electrical current passes through the body while the machine measures how different tissues respond. The current is generally not felt, and the test does not use ionizing radiation.
Because lean tissue and fat tissue contain different amounts of water, they conduct the current differently. The device uses those measurements to estimate your body composition.
You remain in light clothing throughout the assessment. Shoes, socks, heavy jewelry, and bulky accessories are removed.

Five body segments measured separately
One of the most useful features of the InBody 580 is segmental analysis. Instead of treating the body as one compartment, the InBody evaluates five separate areas:
Right arm
Left arm
Trunk
Right leg
Left leg
This allows your provider to review how lean mass is distributed and compare corresponding areas, such as your right and left legs. Segmental analysis can help identify differences between sides and track how specific areas change over time.

This information may be helpful after an injury, surgery, pregnancy, prolonged inactivity, or a major change in physical activity. It may also support conversations about strength, balance, mobility, and healthy aging.
There is a meaningful difference between being told, “You weigh 174 pounds,” and learning that one leg has less lean mass than the other. The second finding gives your care team something specific to explore.
What does an InBody scan measure?
Your InBody result sheet may include:
Skeletal muscle mass
An estimate of the muscle involved in movement, posture, and physical function. Tracking this measurement may help your provider evaluate whether a weight-loss plan is preserving lean tissue.
Body water and phase angle
The InBody 580 provides body-water and phase-angle measurements that may offer additional information about hydration and tissue characteristics. These results require professional interpretation and should not be used as stand-alone diagnoses.
Segmental lean analysis
This section compares lean mass in the arms, legs, and trunk. It can help your provider evaluate left-to-right balance and monitor regional changes.
Body-fat mass and body-fat percentage
Body-fat mass estimates how many pounds of your total weight come from fat. Body-fat percentage estimates the proportion of your weight that comes from fat. These measurements can help distinguish fat loss from a general decrease in total weight.
Estimated visceral fat
Visceral fat is stored deeper within the abdomen around internal organs. The InBody may provide an estimated visceral fat measurement, depending on the result-sheet configuration. Your provider interprets this result alongside blood pressure, laboratory testing, waist measurement, medical history, and other health information.
Supporting Medical Weight Loss in Spring Valley at IWC
An InBody scan is most useful when the results are reviewed by a healthcare professional who understands your complete health history.
The IWC Medical Weight Loss Program in Spring Valley combines body composition monitoring with physician-supervised care. Your provider may consider your InBody results alongside your laboratory findings, medications, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, health conditions, and treatment goals.

Depending on your needs, your plan may include nutrition guidance, resistance exercise, behavioral strategies, medical treatment, and prescription medication when appropriate.
Follow-up body composition scans can help your care team evaluate whether:
Body-fat mass is decreasing
Skeletal muscle mass is being maintained
Lean mass appears balanced
Body-water changes may be affecting your results
The current plan is producing the intended changes
The goal is not simply to make the number on the scale smaller. It is to support sustainable fat loss while protecting strength, function, and lean tissue.
Personalized care starts with better information
Your provider can review your InBody results alongside your laboratory findings, medications, health history, lifestyle, and goals. Together, you can develop a plan focused on sustainable fat loss, muscle preservation, and long-term health.
Schedule an InBody 580 scan in Spring Valley
Your weight is one piece of information. It cannot show how much muscle or body fat you have, how lean mass is distributed, or what may be changing during your health or weight-loss journey.
An InBody 580 body composition scan at IWC Primary Care in Spring Valley, CA, can provide additional information about muscle mass, body fat, visceral fat, body water, and left-to-right balance.
The scan is only the beginning. The most important step is reviewing the results with a healthcare professional who can turn the information into an individualized plan.
